Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Hollow King

He dreamed of a black sea, and a throne of quiet, and on the throne something shaped like a king, the way a wound is shaped like a mouth.

"Maja liuboŭ kniaź ciemry i smutku, voin padziemnaha svietu."

The words slithered through the dark, oily and pleased. "My love, the prince of darkness and sorrow, warrior of the underworld. Your mother's dying words. My son's titles. Did you never wonder, boy, why you understood them?"

Shizui stood on a sea that did not move. "Who are you?"

"BLOOD understands its father's tongue," the thing said. "Come. Let me tell you what your mother died without telling you."

And the dark opened like a book.

He saw a prince of the underworld — a general, feared even among monsters — sent to the surface to prepare the great harvest. He saw him meet a lumberjack's daughter in a border village. He saw him stay. One year. Two. He saw a child born with a furnace sealed in its chest, because the prince had done the one thing no demon had ever done: he had given away his inheritance — hidden the royal fire inside his newborn son and sealed it with the only coin demons honour.

"He paid the seal with the thing he loved most," the Hollow King said. "His memories of her. He could have torn the seal open at any time and reclaimed his fire. He no longer remembered what it was for." The throne laughed without sound. "That is how demons keep faith."

"The mark," Shizui said. His voice came out in pieces. "The mark on her neck."

"A leash. We found her sixteen years too late. She resisted it for years. A strong woman, your mother." A pause like a blade being tasted. "You have her stubbornness. You have my fire. You have everything — except the truth, so here it is, grandson: there was never a war. There was a harvest. The King of the Dragon Realm signed a pact in his own blood — souls for eternity, and my armies as his scarecrows. Your victory at the Red Moon was not our defeat. It was an irritation. And then my watchers saw a boy fight like the underworld itself, and we knew whose son stood on that field."

The dark leaned close.

"So the King purged his heroes — no trace, by decree, that part was his pettiness. But my Voice gave him the true instruction, boy. Grief is a key. We burned your wildflowers to turn it in your lock. Your family died to wake you."

A silence, vast and satisfied.

"It worked."

Shizui's scream cracked the black sea from horizon to horizon.

"Kneel," said the Hollow King. "Take back your father's fire. Be crowned my heir, and we will march on the gods together and finish the war the angels interrupted."

"I don't want your fire," Shizui said. The rage had gone somewhere colder and far more dangerous. "I want the men who sold my family."

"Then spend it as kindling." The throne's amusement was bottomless. "But understand the price, grandson. The fire eats memory. Feed it your mother's lullabies. Your lover's laugh. Power asks a price of everyone — mine was a throne. Yours will be everything you love."

And far below the black sea, in a cell with no door, something that had forgotten its own name remembered — for one heartbeat — why it had chosen to forget.

"Maj syn," said the deep.

And the whole dark shook.

Shizui woke in the grey hour before dawn with half his hair turned white and a decision black and final in his chest. He would burn the Dragon Realm to its foundations. But he would do it on his feet. He would never kneel again — not to kings, not to gods, not to the dark.

You have special blood within you. You must always remember that.

For twenty years, he had carried half a sentence. Now he carried all of it — and it weighed exactly as much as a dead world.
