Chapter 9 - 9. Snapdragon

His body moved with each breath he took. Darkness surrounded him as his head ached from all the flashes he could not keep track of after hundreds of years. He had experienced torture, but nothing compared to the torture he was experiencing with the flashes.

'hmmm mmmmh hmmm mmmmh' the voice hummed. The lullaby echoed through his head on repeat like a broken record.

"Dorian," the soft voice whispered in his ear as if it were right next to him. But he knew well enough that the one responsible for this torture was not there.

He could smell the death that surrounded the witch, but there was something else. He could smell the scent of lavender, roses, and strawberries, as well as the smell of nature. But all he could hear was the sound of her faint heartbeat, replaying through his mind and taunting him.

"Where are you, witch?" he grits out.

"I am right here!" the voice cried out as he was no longer surrounded by darkness, but he was now standing among the trees that surrounded him. Water is rushing in the distance.

Everything went quiet.

"You want to know where I am?" the soft voice questioned him in his mind. His breathing was harsh as he waited for the witch to continue. "Then open your eyes," the girl whispered in his ear as if she were next to him. His eyes snapped open, and his vision was clear. Surrounded by flowers and with the birds chirping happily, he stood in a garden. He began walking along the garden as if he were in a maze. He stopped in his tracks as he spotted a girl a few feet away from him, her back to him as she was oblivious to his presence.

His fangs extended. "I got you, witch," he thought as he took a step closer, but stopped in his tracks. The girl's black, wavy hair reached past her waist, and her fair skin was dressed in a pearl-colored dress. She slightly turned to him. He could not make out her face but a necklace hanging from her neck, but she could not make it out as his attention was then drawn to the flower in her hand. The girl held a small purple flower in her hand. He watched her twirl the stem in her hands as she stared down at it, a frown on her face. She slowly turned away from him as she reached her hand with the flower up to a wall covered in the small purple flowers, placing the flower among them. But something changed. There were no longer chirping birds, but only silence. A black mass caught his eye, and on top of the wall of flowers sat a single raven, staring down at the girl.

Darkness began creeping in as she disappeared, and he was pulled back into reality.

His breathing was harsh, and the chains that once held him were no longer bolted to the wall. His body slumped forward from tiredness.

"Could you make out anything this time?" Michael questioned, eager for anything that could help him.

"A dark-haired girl," he sighed, wiping the sweat from his brow.

"Anything else?" Michael asked him.

"No," Dorian said, pulling the chains from his wrists and leaving the cellar.
