Chapter 33 - The Trail He Left Behind (Part 7)

The sound echoed once.

Then silence reclaimed the tunnel.

Alexander didn't move.

He raised one hand, signalling Evelyn to remain exactly where she was.

She obeyed without question.

Only moments ago she would have demanded an explanation.

Now...

She had learned something about Alexander Vale.

When he became completely still...

It meant he was listening.

Not with his ears alone.

With memory.

The tunnel breathed around them.

Water dripped steadily from cracked brickwork.

Somewhere ahead...

A loose chain swayed gently against metal.

Alexander closed his eyes.

"Three people."

Evelyn stared at him.

"What?"

"They closed the gate."

"How do you know?"

"The footsteps."

"I didn't hear anything."

"You weren't meant to."

He opened his eyes again.

"They're professionals."

---

Several hundred yards behind them...

The two gunmen reached the bottom of the abandoned coal chute.

The younger one swept his lantern across the damp floor.

"They came this way."

The older man crouched beside a footprint.

Not studying it.

Measuring it.

"One man."

"One woman."

The younger operative looked deeper into the darkness.

"We can still catch them."

"No."

The older man stood.

"They've already heard us."

He looked toward the tunnel ahead.

"They'll stop running now."

"They'll start thinking."

---

Arthur Delbury arrived outside Evelyn's apartment to find uniformed officers holding back a growing crowd.

Neighbours spoke over one another.

Everyone had heard the gunshots.

No one had seen the shooters clearly.

Arthur ducked beneath the police cordon.

"Inspector."

A constable hurried over.

"No bodies."

Arthur released a breath he hadn't realised he was holding.

"Evelyn?"

"We can't find her."

Arthur looked toward the shattered second-floor window.

"What about signs of blood?"

"None."

Collins emerged from the building carrying a spent rifle round wrapped in cloth.

Arthur accepted it carefully.

He frowned immediately.

"This isn't military."

"No."

Collins shook his head.

"It's custom-machined."

Arthur looked back toward the apartment.

"Professionals."

Collins nodded.

"They knew exactly where to shoot."

Arthur climbed the stairs without another word.

---

Inside...

The apartment looked as though a storm had torn through it.

Glass covered the floor.

Books lay scattered.

The survey map had been ripped in half by a bullet.

Arthur walked slowly through the room.

He wasn't looking at the damage.

He was looking at the empty spaces.

Something was missing.

He just didn't know what.

He stopped beside the broken window.

Looked down into the street.

Then turned slowly toward the pantry.

The door stood slightly open.

Arthur walked over.

He pushed it fully open.

Nothing.

Only shelves.

Coal dust.

Old wooden panels.

He was about to turn away...

When his eyes settled on faint scrape marks near the floor.

Fresh.

He knelt.

Ran his fingers across the timber.

Then found the iron ring.

Hidden beneath loose dust.

Arthur smiled.

"Henry would've liked you."

Collins looked confused.

"What?"

Arthur pulled the concealed hatch open.

Cold air rushed upward.

"A hidden exit."

Collins let out a low whistle.

"So they escaped."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"They chose this route."

"There's a difference."

---

Far below...

Alexander extinguished the lantern he had taken from the wall near the chute.

Darkness swallowed the passage.

Evelyn instinctively reached toward him.

Her hand found his sleeve.

He didn't pull away.

"They'll expect light."

He whispered.

"So we'll give them darkness."

For several seconds...

Neither of them moved.

Then...

Alexander quietly stepped off the main passage.

Not forward.

Sideways.

Evelyn almost missed the narrow opening concealed within the brickwork.

A maintenance tunnel.

Barely wide enough for one person.

"How did you see that?"

"I didn't."

He rested his hand against the wall.

"The air changed."

She stared at him.

He spoke as though it were the most ordinary thing in the world.

"The draft is stronger here."

He entered the narrow passage.

Evelyn followed.

Behind them...

Boots splashed through shallow water.

The hunters had reached the main tunnel.

---

The younger operative stopped.

"They've vanished."

The older man remained calm.

"No."

"They've adapted."

He slowly swept his lantern across the walls.

Most saw bricks.

He saw differences.

Older mortar.

Newer repairs.

Hidden lines.

His lantern stopped on the narrow opening.

"There."

The younger man smiled.

"I'll go after them."

The older operative grabbed his arm.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because they want us to."

The younger man frowned.

"You think it's an ambush?"

"I think..."

The older man's gaze remained fixed on the darkness.

"...the man with her knows tunnels."

That changed everything.

He slowly lowered the lantern.

"We stop chasing."

The younger operative looked stunned.

"We're letting them escape?"

"No."

The older man's voice remained steady.

"We're changing the hunt."

He reached into his coat and unfolded a small city map.

His finger rested on a point several streets away.

"There are only three exits from these Victorian service tunnels."

He folded the map again.

"We'll meet them there."

---

Arthur climbed down into the coal chute himself.

The smell of damp earth filled the confined space.

Collins landed beside him.

"You think she came this way?"

Arthur pointed his lantern toward the muddy ground.

"No."

"I know she did."

Two distinct sets of footprints.

One belonged to Evelyn.

The other...

Arthur studied the deeper impressions.

Longer stride.

Measured pace.

Not hurried despite the gunfire.

His expression slowly changed.

"This man..."

Collins looked down.

"What about him?"

Arthur continued examining the prints.

"He never panicked."

Even under fire...

Every footprint was evenly spaced.

No slipping.

No wasted movement.

No signs of hesitation.

Arthur whispered almost to himself,

"Whoever pulled Evelyn out of that apartment..."

"...has escaped places like this before."

He straightened slowly.

For the first time...

Arthur felt he wasn't simply investigating Henry Whitlock anymore.

Somewhere ahead in the darkness...

Another man had quietly stepped onto the board.

A man Arthur had never met.

A man who left behind no fingerprints.

No witnesses.

Only impossibly disciplined footsteps leading deeper beneath London.

And without realising it...

Arthur had just begun following the trail of the one man Scotland Yard had searched for...

Arthur looked once more at the measured footprints disappearing into the darkness.

Whoever had rescued Evelyn Ashcombe was no ordinary civilian.

He moved with training.

With purpose.

And most importantly...

He had reached Evelyn before Scotland Yard had.

Arthur didn't know the man's name.

He didn't know his motives.

But one thing had become painfully clear.

The investigation into Henry Whitlock had just gained another player.

And somehow...

That player always seemed to arrive one step ahead of the police.
