Chapter 18 - Act 18: The Bus Key of the Dead [III]

Day: 2

Location: Kirishima High - Transportation Office

Time: 9:47 A.M

Remaining time before Night: 8 hours and 13 minutes left

"If you value your life, you'd better drop that key before I slit your throat," the holder of the knife threatens Kyosei.

Kyosei promptly stopped advancing forward and moved backwards two steps to get away before kicking the knife out of the guy's hands.

"What the...?!"

"Too sloppy," Kyosei said before running and sliding out of the doorway.

By sliding out, he nearly missed the other guy, who was waiting outside to smack him with a baseball bat. With the knife on the ground, Kyosei grabbed it on the way and started running.

"Drop the key or you are dead!"

"You are dead when we catch you!"

Kyosei didn't turn back to know their identities, whoever they may be. The moment they tried to threaten him, they were no longer someone he needed to contend with, nor did he have the interest to know their reasoning.

Of course, Kyosei is not trying to return to the Clocktower immediately. He didn't want those guys to know that there are others who are still alive. Instead, Kyosei started running away, evading and kicking off some zombies that blocked his way, not trying to kill them in the process.

"Stop running, coward! Aren't you the Devil?! Fight head-on like you always do!"

"Fucker! Stop running!"

Kyosei continued running and decided to use the hallways to his advantage. It would be risky, especially if the front had a lot of zombies that he couldn't evade, but this was needed if he wanted to shake them off.

Based on the voices that keep on shouting behind him, there are at least 4 people chasing him, with one who seemed to recognize him, considering they call him the "Devil," which is his nickname. But he doesn't recognize any of those voices, so maybe they might be delinquents he has beaten up before. But considering he doesn't even remember them, means they aren't even worth remembering, or they aren't that big of a deal that they became a trouble for him.

It doesn't change the fact that he needed to shake them off, and to do that, the zombies are the best way to do that. Considering that they are already shouting while chasing him, that is enough to trigger and drag zombies towards their position. And Kyosei doesn't need to do anything aside from running and evading zombies.

"Stop the bastard!" the students behind him continued shouting and were trying to chase him, but compared to their speed, Kyosei was more used to running and evading enemies.

Instead of going back to the classrooms, he decided to go to the open field. More zombies, more chances that he would lose them in the commotion, and thanks to their noises, zombies would naturally be drawn to them.

And so, Kyosei used this chance to try to lose them by running around zombies, kicking any of them that blocked his way before running again without stopping.

"Sh*t! He is running for the open field! Corner him before he reaches the open area! We must get that key from him no matter what!"

Kyosei heard their voices behind him, but he didn't slow down. The zombies are numerous in numbers now around the campus grounds, and even though they are slow, Kyosei can see a few who are fast shamblers that can instinctively walk faster than the slow zombies and with multiple of them? They can immediately go out of hand very fast if one isn't careful.

And with pursuers? This is the best way to get rid of them.

Kyosei might have no experience killing, but killing others indirectly is something he has done not too long ago, and he doesn't mind doing it again. Is he a sociopath? Not necessarily, but in the apocalypse, any danger can contribute to death if left alone, therefore, if he needed to save the people waiting for him, he doesn't mind a little sacrifice.

Instead of running straight, Kyosei instinctively gathered the zombies from left and right on the field. Since the pursuers are also chasing him, the zombies he has attracted while running meet the pursuers, causing those chasing Kyosei to slow down significantly.

As a crowd of zombies forms behind Kyosei, the pursuers are also running as hard as they can, but they have limits considering they aren't just running but also fighting zombies as well, contributing further to the fatigue buildup.

Compared to Kyosei, who is only running, they are losing stamina much faster. By the time the crowd of zombies has formed, Kyosei is already far from them while they are still stuck getting crowded by zombies. It didn't take too long before one of them made a mistake in his swing, and the zombie caught his hand and bit his arm.

"Aaaaaahhhh! My arm! Get away! Aaaaahhh!"

His throes of death caused the others to also panic due to the situation, but unfortunately, they are deeply in the center of the crowd of zombies, and their screams echoed all over the open field as they were swarmed by the countless zombies.

Kyosei briefly stopped in the distance to catch his breath and to also observe if there were more pursuers. Kyosei sighed in relief before he left behind the dying group to their demise. With the majority of the zombies now focused on the screaming students, the area got cleared out and allowed him to return to safety and return to his previous goal of returning to the clocktower.

Day: 2

Location: Kirishima High - Clocktower top floor

Time: 9:49 A.M

Remaining time before Night: 8 hours and 9 minutes left

"The field is very crowded today. It seems a few survivors attracted those walkers and are being feasted right now," Souichi said while watching the horde forming around the soccer field. He climbed the little balcony above the clock tower, which is normally forbidden to access and only workers are allowed, but with the situation now, there's no need to worry about getting scolded.

"This is horrible... does that mean the majority of the students have turned to zombies by now?" Miyuki wondered as she looked at the situation with fear in her eyes.

"Either they have escaped, or they have died and have indeed become zombies. We are the only people left to be still here in this school who haven't died. By the situation last night, it's only a miracle if someone managed to survive just hiding in one of the classrooms here. With how dangerous those zombies have become at night, I don't want to think too much of it," Nanami said while still fiddling with the laptop.

"Any news from Kyosei? It's been a while since the last call he had earlier about the key," Miyuki asked, curious about where Kyosei is right now.

"I used the tracker, and he seemed to have gone to the parking lot where the School Bus is located. I guess he is checking the key he got?"

"Did he actually get in trouble? That's been half an hour since the last call. Don't tell me because of the zombies? Is it due to the movement of the zombies?" Miyuki frowned.

"Maybe, who knows. One thing is for sure, he is still alive and moving. You guys shouldn't worry about it. He is doing great doing this alone."

Miyuki still couldn't help but feel worried. Kyosei might be indifferent, but he is someone important to the group...and to her. She doesn't know what she would do if she would lose him in the process.

"Ah...looks like he is now here. He should be here any minute now."

As if on cue, knocks can be heard on the door, and Kyosei's voice echoes behind.

"It's me."

Everyone looked at Nanami, and the latter nodded in confirmation. With this, Mr. Leo and the other boys removed the blockade, allowing Kyosei to enter. As soon as he entered, Kyosei slumped to the floor and started catching his breath. He looked really exhausted.

"Is it really bad down there? We have seen the horde on the soccer field. Is it dangerous down there?"

Kyosei shook his head. "No. Also, I am the reason that horde formed in the first place. I just managed to shake them off."

He then turned to look at Mr. Leo on the side. "Also, here is the bus key. Take it, Mr. Leo."

Tossing the key, Mr. Leo caught the key that Kyosei passed to him.

"Is it the right key?" Nanami asked.

"Yeah. Confirmed it properly. Bus seems to be under repair, though, with all the tools scattered in front of the vehicle itself, and yet the one repairing it is gone, which means he might not have survived," Kyosei reported what happened.

"The bus is?!" Mr. Leo frowned.

"Yeah. So unless any of us know how to tinker with a vehicle, then we will not be leaving this place soon enough unless someone repairs that bus," Kyosei sat up after managing to recover a bit of his breath.

"If it is related to vehicles, then I might be able to see if there's something wrong with it," Nejima proposed.

"You know how to fix a car, Nejima?" Miyuki asked.

"Not all cars per se. More like regular cars and some trucks. Maybe if I check it, maybe I can see how it goes? If the bus has a bit of similarity to regular six-wheeler trucks, or even closely resembles it, maybe I can fix it up."

Nanami quickly typed on her laptop and saw a video tutorial related to fixing various parts of a school bus. She quickly downloaded those videos before the internet fully shut down.

Mr. Leo nodded, satisfied, and turned to look at everyone. "Looks like it is time for us to go down and leave the school. Everyone, let's get ready to go to the bus and get to our getaway vehicle. The sooner we leave this hellhole, the better."
