In the kingdom of Varenhold, you are what your Cards say you are.
On the morning of your sixteenth birthday, you attend the Awakening Ceremony and receive your Cards — ancient fragments of dead gods that determine your rank, your worth, and your place in the world. Four Cards makes you elite. Two makes you respectable.
One makes you nothing.
Kael Dawnless receives one Card. A Rank I Blaze Card so weak and so common that the crowd moves on before he even steps off the platform. No family name. No money. No future. Just another outer district boy the world has already decided about.
But something is wrong with his Card.
It responds to him like a river dammed behind paper — something enormous, barely contained, pretending to be small. And on its back sits a strange mark nobody can explain. Two incomplete circles, edges almost touching, waiting for something.
When three armed boys corner Kael in the market the very next day, he discovers what that something is.
