“Please,” Reth said. “I was just hungry.” Asveth tightened his grip around the stranger's throat. For one hundred years, the curse had burned inside him. Endlessly. Unrelentingly. Then— it stopped. Just for a moment. Asveth went still. “You broke into my chambers,” he said quietly. The Reth nodded. “You stole my food.” “Yes.” “And you expected to live?” “…No.” Another pulse of relief spread through Asveth's veins. Impossible. His gaze sharpened. “You're not leaving,” he said. The Reth swallowed. “Why?” Asveth studied him like a puzzle he had waited a century to solve. “Because,” the lord said softly, “you are the first thing in a hundred years that makes the fire stop.”
