The Unnamed Thing
Xu Jun has existed longer than anyone in the provincial court can remember. He holds no title, has no record of appointment, and belongs to no category the world's cosmology has correctly named. He is not the luminous divine transcendence described in the Meridian Codex. He is something quieter and older — a condition the world produced and never found the right word for. He has learned to perform the ordinary. He has learned that people's attention slides past him eventually. He has lived inside isolation long enough that it no longer feels like loss. It simply feels like temperature.
Then Shen Baixi arrives. A court historian. Methodical, unsentimental, notably free of embellishment. He pours tea for Xu Jun without asking. He asks about the missing appointment record without becoming uncomfortable. He writes observations in a small notebook standing in the corridor where things happened because location matters to him.
His records do not slide past Xu Jun. They describe exactly what is there.
For the first time in longer than dynasties last, Xu Jun is being seen accurately. And being seen — he discovers — is not the same as being known. And wanting to be known is not the same as being able to bear it.
