Untitled Hero Novel
“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.”
A deep voice rose above the crackling campfire. Survivors sat around it, clutching spears and makeshift weapons. Some listened. Others watched the sky.
There was nothing remarkable about it anymore. The stars were gone. The moon hung cracked in half.
“But God loved us so much that He made us in His image!” the speaker declared. “Through His Son, He gave us power! We will overcome every hardship! We will prevail—even if it means standing against the end of the earth itself!”
He lifted his weapon toward the broken moon.
“Even without His help, we can still redeem ourselves! If we kill enough of the wicked with our own hands, we can justify ourselves before Him! We can show Him that we are still worthy—that we still deserve His gra—”
The sky flashed white.
Heat struck before anyone could move. The speaker’s raised hand blistered and blackened. His weapon slipped through fingers already coming apart, and his mouth opened around a word he would never finish.
Then the ground ruptured beneath him.
Tents burst into flame. Spears bent in the heat. People crawled over one another, dragging burning limbs through the dirt. Someone screamed for God. Others joined him, their prayers barely audible beneath the roar.
The light swept through them all.
When it faded, the campsite was a hollow of scorched earth, ash, and melted weapons. Above it, the broken moon remained.
God had withdrawn from the world.
Their last prayers had reached Him. He had chosen to leave them unanswered.
