Chapter 13 - "The Final Escape Route"

As soon as Eda gave the signal, I immediately pulled out a card without hesitation.

It was the last one I had left.

This was clearly not the time to mess up.

I threw the card onto the ground near the guards.

Poof.

The floor instantly began to freeze and a pillar of ice suddenly rose from the ground.

"Now let's go" Eda shouted.

She spun her finger and a spell circle formed instantly. A tornado appeared and merged with the ice.

The frozen wind mixed with the tornado and created a thick mist.

The guards immediately became confused.

Some tried to run out of the mist only to slam straight into walls or crash directly into each other.

Okay… even Director Fury got caught inside the fog.

He looked everywhere left and right trying to spot us.

"Ah there you are" he suddenly said after seeing a silhouette in the mist.

Without hesitation, he rushed toward it.

"Owl Lady, did you really think you could escape me?"

His left arm transformed into a hammer and he slammed it into the silhouette.

The figure collapsed onto the ground.

"Hahaha finally I got you. Huh? You kept saying you would never go out with me. Don't worry, you will have plenty of time to rethink that in prison."

Then Fury suddenly noticed something was wrong.

His heart tightened.

"No… impossible."

He bent down and turned the unconscious silhouette around.

He brought the body closer and his eyes widened in disbelief.

It was indeed a person.

But not Eda.

The one Fury had knocked out was nothing more than an unlucky guard who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Fury smashed the ground with such force that a massive crater formed beneath him.

"NO NO NO NOOOOOOO. CURSE YOU OWL LADY."

His scream was so loud it could probably be heard from the other side of the prison.

"Did you hear that? Eheh looks like our dear friend appreciated the little gift we left him" Eda laughed.

We had started running the moment Eda gave the signal and after a while we finally managed to put some distance between ourselves and the guards.

We were now heading toward the prison's confiscated items room.

Ahead of us stood a massive door.

That door was none other than the confiscation room itself.

"Ahhh… finally we made it."

At that moment I was completely out of breath.

I felt an overwhelming exhaustion.

After all, today I chased a carriage with a bicycle, fought demons trying to rob me, discovered that I had somehow created a completely new variable in the story, successfully cast my first spell, infiltrated a high security prison, fought guards, freed prisoners, and now we were trying to break into a room filled with confiscated criminal objects just to recover King's crown… which later turns out to be made of cardboard.

After everything I had done in a single day, it was no surprise I was this exhausted.

"Hey… are you okay?"

"Hm?"

I tilted my head toward the person speaking to me.

It was Luz.

She was looking at me with concern in her eyes.

She… she was worried about me?

Well, somehow it seemed like the two of us had become closer than I expected.

That thought made me feel like all my efforts had not been meaningless.

I turned toward her.

"Don't worry. After everything that happened, I'm just a little tired. I'll recover in no time."

Luz visibly relaxed after hearing my answer.

"Okay. But don't push yourself too hard. We'll escape this horrible prison soon enough."

"Yeah… you're right" I said while nodding.

Beside us, Eda spoke up.

"We're finally here."

She prepared to open the giant door in front of us.

"So… why did you come to this prison anyway?" I asked Luz.

"Well actually, we're here looking for King's crown" she answered while pointing at him on her shoulder.

"Those scoundrels stole my crown. They shall pay for their insolence" King declared dramatically.

"Yeah yeah I'm sure they will."

Honestly, I already knew why they came here, but I asked anyway so the conversation would feel more natural.

Meanwhile, Eda had finally opened the huge door.

King did not hesitate for even a second and immediately rushed inside.

"My crown. My precious crown."

As we entered the room, we could see a gigantic blue beam of light in the center.

Inside the beam were all kinds of confiscated objects.

And at the very top of the pile sat a small crown.

"There it is" King shouted while rushing forward.

But the moment his head touched the blue light, he was violently thrown backward.

"Ow that hurts."

"King, you know demons can't pass through the barrier. That's why we brought a human" Eda said while proudly pointing at Luz.

"Oh right."

We had now fully entered the room and Luz slowly approached the blue barrier at the center.

I watched everything from the back while sighing in relief.

Finally.

After this, we can leave this cursed prison.

At that exact moment, rapid footsteps echoed behind us.

I instantly recognized who they belonged to.

Oh come on. Why does nothing ever go the way I want?

I turned around.

At the entrance stood Fury.

Enraged.

Even behind his glasses, you could feel the overwhelming hatred radiating from him.

Without hesitation, he charged toward us at terrifying speed.
