Chapter 29 - Hunger of the Forgotten

The bone-white sand of the Coliseum was not merely ground; it was the pulverized remains of uncounted histories. As Kael stood over the spot where Marcus the Bold had just been claimed by a Narrative Trap, he felt the **Seed of a Failed Protagonist** in his chest pulsing with a new, frantic tempo. The air here was heavy with "Narrative Residue," a thick, invisible smog of data that tasted like copper and old paper.

Marcus, the once-Sovereign now degraded to an Ember-tier ghost, struggled against the invisible shackles Kael had manifested through **Ghost Data. The rusted armor of the fallen hero screeched as he tried to lift his crimson-flecked sword. To Marcus, this was a battle for resurrection; to Kael, it was a diagnostic test for his new stage of existence.

"You think... a few lines of deleted code... can hold me?" Marcus roared, his Soul Index of 900 flickering like a dying torch."I was the Lead of the Iron Age! I am the one who stood against the first Rift!".

"The keyword is 'was,' Marcus," Kael said, his voice flat and layered with the resonance of the Void. "The System didn't just prune you; it hollowed you out. You're holding onto a script that has already been burned."

The Shadow of the Statues

Around the arena, the rows of stone statues began to hum. Kael's display of power, albeit subtle, had acted like a flare in a dark ocean. The "Forgotten," the entities too heavy for the System's current memory, were stirring.

Seren Vale stood guard over the unconscious Lira, her amethyst aura forming a protective dome that shivered under the pressure of the arena's atmosphere. "Kael, more of them are waking up. The 'Bounty of the Ghost' isn't just a quest here—it's an addiction. They think your 'Zero' status is the key to their return".

Kael didn't look back. He watched as two more statues—a hooded rogue with twin daggers of obsidian and a priestess whose robes were made of frozen shadows—cracked open, their Soul Indices igniting in the dim light.

[ **Combined Threat: LETHAL** ]

"Three against one," Vesper hissed, his silhouette blurring as he entered a 'Phase Walk'—a high-tier stealth ability that Kael recognized from his time in the Astra Guild cargo bay. "Even a virus has a limit, Zero."

The Void Command

Kael closed his eyes. He didn't need to see them; he needed to see the lines. With his Stage 2: Event Thief reaching its limit and the Stage 3: Narrative Breaker** clawing for birth, Kael reached into the very sand of the Coliseum.

[ **New Skill Initializing: Void Command (Active)** ]

[ **Effect: Forcibly overwrite local environmental logic** ]

"Hijack," Kael murmured.

The bone-white sand didn't just shift; it obeyed. Kael used the 104,000 stored Index points he had devoured during the Veil Games to manifest a localized "Null Zone". As Vesper lunged from the shadows, his daggers aimed for Kael's throat, the space between them elongated. The rogue's speed, his Tier-Catalyst momentum, and his very intent were caught in a logic loop.

Vesper froze mid-air, his obsidian daggers pixelating into grey cubes.

"This isn't a fight, Vesper," Kael said, walking through the frozen sand toward the Architect-tier Nun. "A fight requires two characters with a future. You are just background noise I haven't deleted yet".

 The Price of the Breach

The Silent Nun didn't speak—her rank forbade it—but she raised a staff of white bone, and the air around Kael began to crystallize into "Script Barriers". These were the same logic walls that had pinned Kael during Rex Halvard's final stand.

Kael's chest flared with a blinding violet heat. The **Seed** was reacting to the Nun's authority, sensing a fragment of the Architect's governance in her magic. He felt his skin beginning to crack at the collarbone, the physical frame of a Hollow struggling to contain the power of a Narrative Breaker.

"You want to use the System's laws in a place the System abandoned?" Kael laughed, a dark, clinical sound that echoed up into the dead moon's sky. "That's your first mistake."

Kael didn't try to break the barriers. He **devoured** them. He placed his hand on the glowing white runes, and instead of being repelled, he acted as a sinkhole. The Nun's Index of 60,000 began to drain through the staff, flowing into Kael like a torrent of liquid lead.

[ **Status: Narrative Weight rising to 1.5% (The Unseen is becoming Visible)** ]

The Nun's eyes, hidden behind her hood, widened in a silent scream. Her body began to flicker, her 'Architect' rank fading into a dull, grey 'Hollow' status as Kael stripped her of her reason to exist.

The Sound of the Hunger

Marcus and Vesper watched in horror as their most powerful ally was reduced to a literal ghost in seconds. They realized then that Kael Veyron wasn't a participant in the Games anymore. He was the end of the Games themselves.

"The Herald said you were a variable," Marcus whispered, falling to his knees as the sand around him turned into a black vortex. "But you're just... hunger."

"I am what happens when the script stops making sense," Kael said, the violet embers in his eyes solidifying into obsidian pools.

He turned toward the center of the Coliseum, where a massive, rusted gate stood—the entrance to the **Deep Veil**. Beyond it lay the truth of Aetherion, and the entities that even the Architect feared[].

"Lira, Seren, move," Kael commanded. "The Forgotten are waking up, and I haven't finished the first course."
