Chapter 11 - Sovereign’s Price

The cargo bay felt like a tomb under the weight of Seren Vale's gaze. The hum of the Astra Dawn's engines vibrated through the floor plates, but the silence between Kael and the silver-clad Catalyst was absolute.

Seren's rapier remained leveled at Kael's throat, the frozen starlight at its tip crackling with a lethal, high-frequency energy. "You speak of decay as if you've seen the end of my story," Seren said, her voice a sharp blade of ice. "I am a Catalyst at the peak of my Tier. My Index is nearly 10,000. What could a Hollow with no value possibly know about the weight of a Hero?".

Kael didn't blink. He kept his hand pressed against the Sovereign-Class crate, the Index Devour ability continuing to bleed the refined Aether cores into his system like a slow, intravenous poison. "I know that your Index hasn't moved in three months," Kael replied, his voice devoid of emotion. "The System has stopped rewarding your 'Heroism' because your actions have become predictable. You save the innocent, you kill the beasts, and you follow the Astra Guild's orders. You are no longer changing events; you are merely fulfilling a quota.".

Seren's silver aura flickered, a jagged spike of doubt momentarily clouding her perfection. [ Narrative Instability Detected ] [ Target: Seren Vale ] [ Status: Querying the Script... ]

"The moment you become a tool of the System, you lose your Narrative Weight," Kael continued, leaning slightly closer to the light of her blade. "Rex knows this. That's why he's desperate. He's trying to force a breakthrough by hoarding these catalysts. But you? You're still waiting for the world to reward you for being 'good.' ".

Suddenly, a muffled boom echoed from the decks above, followed by a series of rapid-fire alarms. [ Warning: Cargo Bay 7 Compromised ] [ Inbound: Rex Halvard (Sovereign Rank) ]

Lira Voss gasped from the shadows, her eyes darting toward the heavy pressure door. "Kael! He's coming! If Rex finds us here with Seren..."

Kael's gaze never left Seren's eyes. "He's coming for the 'glitch.' If you kill me now, you prove you're nothing but the System's executioner. But if you let me leave, you'll have a variable that Rex can't account for. A way to reclaim your own story.".

Seren's hand trembled. The logic was a virus, eating at the foundation of her training. The gold light of Rex's approaching aura was already visible through the cracks of the door frame.

"Go," she hissed, the silver light of her rapier vanishing as she stepped back into the shadows of the adjacent aisle. "But know this, Unrecorded Boy. If our paths cross again and you are still a Zero, I will erase you myself to fix the script.".

Kael didn't thank her. He didn't have time. [ Hijack Complete ] [ Refined Aether Devoured ] [ Evolution Progress: 4.5% toward Stage 2: 'Event Thief' ]

He grabbed Lira's arm and dived into the ship's secondary ventilation shaft just as the main cargo doors exploded inward in a shower of golden sparks and twisted steel.

Rex Halvard stepped into the bay, his claymore dragged behind him, leaving a scorched trail on the floor. "Where is he?" Rex roared, his Index of 72,000 pulsing with a maddened, suffocating heat.

Seren Vale stepped out from behind a crate, her face a mask of cold, heroic indifference. "There is no one here, Rex. Only your own shadows.".

In the dark of the vents, Kael felt the Seed in his chest grow warm. He had stolen the credit, the prize, and now, the loyalty of the System's finest weapon.
