Chapter 3 - The Forest

Shawn, the new associate of the mafia that was sent to rescue Kurt, drove away from the store in a hurry.

They were not in the clear, though. Two vehicles followed them, soon appearing in the rear-view mirrors. Shawn cursed, then pointed towards the back with his thumb.

"Cap, there's a shotgon under the backseat."

Kurt nodded, immidiately understanding what has to be done.

Having no time to roll the window down, he whipped the shotgun's stock, shattering the glass right away. A moment later, he fired on one of the trucks.

The cars were not so far apart anymore, so hitting his target was not so much if a challenge. At least not for someone with his skill.

The moment his first shot hit the enemy's door, the other vehicle had already started shooting at shawn's side. This was also when Shawn ducked and Kurt shot right over his head, killing one of the other vehicle's passengers and shattering Shawn's window.

Shawn held the steering wheel tighter, that it almost gave up and bent to his strength. He was looking all around him, trying to assess the situation, and find the best possible moves for the best possible outcome. Doing that while trying to also avoid getting shot was not easy.

They made their way to the highway after chasing each other for some time.

The three wagons exchanged fire for a few moments. Then, at some point, one of the other drivers was hit, causing him to send his car in an uncontrolled swerve.

The remaining car's passenger was already dead, but the driver stubbornly continued to chase them down.

He also pushed forward and performed a pit maneuver.

At first, Shawn managed to resist the force and control the vehicle. Seconds later, however, their wagon drifted sidways. Because of how fast they were going on the highway, the truck was sent into a violent roll.

Shawn and Kurt held tigh, supporting their weights with their hands on the roof. Everything was happening so fast.

Kurt was cursing his luck.

When the deformed wagon finally came to rest, upside down and in the middle of a forest, flames started to engluf it. Then, a battered figure slowly crawled out of the fire and reached with his arm inside the car to grab a gun. He slowly reloaded the pistol while on the ground, and turned his body around.

By then, the sound of an engine stopping could be heard from behind.

Shawn tiredly forced himself to stand up. He failed, then succeeded after multiple attempts. Standing still, he waited for a little while, then started walking around the burning car.

Their pursuer was now on foot, walking towards Shawn and firing at him.

Shawn was crouching behind the car. His intention were to quickly pull Kurt out before the vehicle explodes. Simultaneously, he was trying to hold back the enemy.

Once again, he reached through the flames, grabbing hold of Kurt and pulling him out. He dragged him away from both, the vehicle and the incoming enemy. Which also helped them stay away from his line of sight.

For now at least...

The truck blew up at the last moment. The shockwave almost caught up with them, but they were far enough to avoid any serious harm.

However, Shawn's concern was all but one thing, Kurt. Kurt was his mission afterall. If Kurt dies, it wouldn't make sense for Shawn, himself, to live. If he manages to survive and escape, the Santi family will hunt him down.

Kurt was unconcious, and Shawn will have to defend his body. This is why they were now behind a large tree.

Splinters of wood flew by as the tree tanked the bullets. Shawn grimaced, leaning on the tree.

The surrounding area was dark, only lit by the scorching flames of the exploded wagon. It was hard for their enemy to take a good shot. He had already done a good job tracking which tree was covering them.

Turning around, he quickly scanned the forest for his pursuer and shot a few warning bullets. Receiving a few in exchange. No one was shot yet.

Since Kurt was unconcious, he was going to be holding Shawn back, so the plan was set accordingly.

Shawn covered Kurt with leaves and ditched him to concentrate on his enemy. Then, he covered his eyes with a piece of cloth, turning completely blind. With the blindfold on, his eyes were going to adjust to the complete darkness. When the blindfold is removed, he would be able to see clearer.

Shawn blindly shot some bullets, trying to buy himself some time. Finally, he took off his blindfold, seeing the whole world clearer. The difference was not that vast, but it was something. Any slight advantage can make a great difference.

"You're screwed!"

Shawn swifly moved from tree to tree, his adrenaline supporting his strength and suppressing the pain. He had noticed a pattern to how his opponent moves, and recognised a possible chance of an opening. He slowly moved in closer to the enemy.

Then, even closer. Closer until there were only two trees seperating them. The opponent suddenly talked, his voice echoing through the forest.

"Out of rounds?"

Shawn grinned in the shadows, then answered.

"I've got plenty!"

The enemy chuckled, then fired a bullet.

"Come at me!"

They both lunged at each other, then Shawn suddenly flicked his gun, firing the semi-automatic pistol three times in a row. The attacker quickly dropped to the ground, motionless.

Shawn almost thought that he killed him, until he noticed a single bullet hole in his leg, and no other. Before he could react, however, the enemy's body moved, shooting him instantly.

Shawn fell to the floor, clutching his abdomen as blood poured on the grass. His enemy slowly sat up and aimed the gun at him. Then, he pulled the trigger...

For a second, Shawn's life flashed before his eyes. However, he was not dead.

The enemy's gun turned out to be empty, so he threw it aside and crawled towards Shawn as he pulled out a knife.

Shawn spat some blood as he helplessly watched the attacker approach him. It was like the grim reaper himself was coming for him.

However, the enemy never got to reach Shawn afterall.

Footsteps were heard, then a figure appeared from between the trees.

Kurt was holding a shotgun in one hand, and holding his back with the other. If it wasn't for the menacing features Kurt possessed, they would've mistaken him for an old man. It seemed that he was not seriously injured during the accident, other than his back hurting a little.

Kurt aimed the shotgun on the enemy and looked at Shawn.

"You two look like shit!"

They both looked at him with empty eyes, making him look himself over.

"Oh... right, I look even worse. Anyways, kid, you want this feller alive?"

Shawn laid his head back down on the grass, then said in a hoarse voice.

"I don't."

The enemy looked at the bleeding corpse on the ground, then back at the old man with the shotgun. He raised his hand, signaling for Kurt not to shoot.

"Please, let me go and you will never-"

Before he finished talking, his head suddenly exploded.

Kurt spat on the headless enemy and walked over towards Shawn.
