The town of Crythin Gifford was a place of hushed voices and averted eyes. When Arthur mentioned Eel Marsh House, the locals froze. Samuel Daily, a wealthy landowner, offered a grim warning but little else. To reach the house, Arthur had to travel across the Nine Lives Causeway—a narrow strip of land that vanished completely when the tide came in, leaving the mansion a lonely island in a sea of gray mist.
