Chapter 48: Creepers Meet.
~~~ [START]
In a jungle, amidst a mountain of towering trees, an army of red-cloaked figures stood there, watching over with mocking glances at a naked man, whose eyes were molten and skin pale white.
"How?" the naked man questioned in a low voice; his power wasn't working, it couldn't.
"Gabriel," Caius said, walking forward with the long sleeve of his cloak hanging around his arm.
Dusk had fallen now, leaving no room for their skin to shine.
Gabriel turned in confusion, the hand he had raised lightly trembling. "Caius?"
His red eyes trailed to the dozens behind Caius, or more specifically, to one of them, a man he knew too well, who had blond hair and skin as pale as his, whose hands were both lifted forward, pointing directly toward him.
"Caius… what is this?" Gabriel asked again.
Caius stopped, smiling; Gabriel's fear excited him.
"You must have heard by now, did you not?" Caius asked, both arms moving and folding behind him. "The halfling has gone rogue… we are hunting him."
Gabriel's eyes flickered. "Yeah, I know, but I—"
"Don't know where he is, do you?" Caius finished Gabriel's words for him. "Of course."
A flood of relief caused a smile to embrace Gabriel's lips, but as fast as the smile came, as swiftly as it vanished.
"And you aren't searching?" Caius questioned, words silent but heavy.
Gabriel noted the weight, so with haste, he lowered to the floor, kneeling on both knees. "Forgive me… I wasn't informed I was required to."
"Well… do you know where he is?" Caius asked, as if he had been ignoring the man's words all this while.
Gabriel lifted his head to Caius's face, as if predicting his fate. "No."
Caius frowned, nose twitching as though releasing a breath. "So be it."
Then he turned and started walking away.
A minute drained, yet even then, the army of vampires that came with Caius remained standing there, smiling, waiting.
"On me?" Gabriel asked, still kneeling, but this time his eyes were turned to someone else, Ash. "You're using your power on me?"
Ash didn't dare step forward, but the hesitation on his face was clear; even his raised hands fought against him; they nearly lowered.
"Why?" Gabriel asked. "Why betray him?"
Ash blinked, even though he didn't need to; habits from before he was turned. "They said they will give me Drex—"
In a split second, Caius appeared from nowhere, cloak nowhere to be seen, both hands holding tightly and pulling Gabriel's head.
Ash nearly jolted forward, but Gabriel's head soared upward the next second, completely separated from his neck. And before Ash could react, the head vanished from midair, as an unknown force brought it falling toward the back.
Ash couldn't process it, but the sound of the head burning from afar blessed his ears. But he was sure he heard it; it wasn't the wind.
Because before Gabriel's head left him, he clearly heard him say something.
'Drex is dead.'
Caius straightened, turned, as he softly made his way to his army. "Let us move!"
"Yes," Ash replied, also turning as they left.
Troy stopped, but Emmett still bumped against him.
"Watch your step," Emmett said, laughing because they both knew he did it on purpose.
"Yeah, sorry, man," Troy said, moving aside to walk away, but Rosalie appeared from behind the tall lad, also obstructing him.
She blinked. "We need to talk."
Troy chuckled a bit. Moments ago, he wondered how he didn't notice Emmett trailing him, but now, seeing both of them, it was clear his condition was worsening. "Sure, but I can't right now."
Troy stepped aside again, attempting to walk past her, but a flash flicked on his face as a pale, semi-red-eyed lad obstructed him next.
Troy sighed, and Jasper smiled awkwardly. Troy turned behind him, from the approaching steps of Edythe.
"Okay," Troy forced a smile, "we can talk, but I only have 20 minutes; I have to be somewhere."
Rosalie frowned.
"Don't," Edward, who bleeped from the hallway, interrupted her thoughts.
Troy smiled a bit, inwardly trying his hardest to stop thinking. "Edward, man, can you please tell them I have to get somewhere—"
"The auditorium is empty, let's talk there," Edward said, not even glancing at him.
Troy just breathed; there was nothing he could do. So, after a moment, he led the way.
They all knew Bella was staring at them from afar, but Edward told her everything, so hiding was irrelevant.
Now, what they didn't expect was for her to follow behind them; they underestimated her stupidity.
But she was human. And what humans don't fear, they want.
{ELSEWHERE}
Billy Black sat in the wheelchair, one hand holding a glass of whisky, while the other held onto a large cigar. And even though it wasn't lit, Billy kept placing it on his lips, removing it, and blowing out air.
"You're smoking again?" Jacob asked, walking out from the door, closing it behind him, holding two beers. He took a seat, handing one forward. "It's cold."
Billy took it while moving the cigar, placing it on his ear and straightening his hat.
"So?" Jacob asked again. His voice was a tad serious. "You're smoking?"
Billy shook his head. "Just burning some habits."
Jacob chuckled, sipping his beer.
"You?" Billy asked. "The girl… You like her?"
Jacob tried to hide his blush, but Billy was his father, so he saw right through it.
"I know times have changed, but…" Billy took another sip, "If you want, I can send word to Charlie, you know, get him to arrange something—"
"No!" Jacob said, eyes widened, completely shocked.
Billy laughed so much that tears started falling from his eyes. "I'm just playing with you."
Jacob chuckled after he said it, chugging his beer.
Billy didn't even mind it; after all, it was just beer. All he was thankful for was that Jacob wasn't doing the mischief he was doing when he was younger.
There was a pause, something which Jacob knew wouldn't last.
"When I lost your mother, I…" Billy hesitated as he said it, "I was broken. I thought it was my fault, that maybe, just maybe, if I wasn't driving that night, she would have survived."
Billy's voice was weakening now, so the man swallowed.
"I—"
"It's okay," Jacob tried stopping Billy from talking, but after he realised he failed, an awkward smile came onto his lips.
"Jacob," Billy turned his eyes to him. "Even after that incident, I didn't blame myself, you know why?"
Jacob kept to the silence.
"Because I loved her too much to even think it was my fault… I blamed the brakes, the weather, I even blamed the wind, Jacob."
Jacob didn't remember how many times Billy said this story; all he knew was that it was too many.
Billy breathed, finally turning his eyes away from the boy and glancing at the horizon. "I loved her."
"I know," Jacob said, smiling, expecting it to be the end, but—
"Do you love her?" Billy asked, once again turning to him. "Do you love Bella?"
