Chapter 9 - Chapter 5: Power Audit{Edited}

Rain slicked the Gotham rooftops in sheets, painting the city in muted neon reflections. Valerian Nightseeker perched on the edge of a crumbling ledge, hood pulled over his face, Nightseeker's Urban Arcanum clinging to him like a second skin.

He flexed his fingers through the fingerless gloves, feeling the familiar hum of arcane energy. Everything was the same—and yet, completely different.

The universe had downgraded him to Level 10. Spell slots were fewer, slower to recover. But that was all. Every signature spell, every mastered technique, every Eldritch Adept feat remained intact.

He could still Misty Step through the shadows, raise Shield in reaction to a falling brick, and activate Armor of Shadows at will. His Arcane Ward functioned normally; his Signature Abjuration mastery was untouched. The only limitation was the number of times he could draw upon the magic at once.

"So… the universe nerfed me in capacity, not capability," he muttered, testing his Mage Armor focus.

He conjured Shield against a random hail of debris from a nearby construction crane. The silver runes lining his Urban Arcanum flared faintly, and the force pushed the metal away harmlessly.

Next, he tried Misty Step. One moment he was crouched near the edge of the rooftop; the next, he was behind the billboard on the next street, unseen, unheard, untouched by Gotham's chaos.

"Perfect," he whispered. "All my tricks, all my prep… intact. I just need to ration them."

He opened his spellbook and thumbed through it. Counterspell, Dispel Magic, Mirror Image—all were ready. Only the number of casts had been reduced. Level 10 in this universe meant smaller pool, same power, and he smiled grimly.

Valerian then tested his Eldritch Adept feat. Calling on Armor of Shadows, he wrapped himself in the subtle, invisible protection of magical armor. No one would notice. No one could challenge it. His Nightseeker outfit worked in perfect synergy with the ward and his innate defenses.

For the first time, he allowed himself a small, satisfied grin.

"I may be 'lower level,'" he murmured, "but the night won't break me."

He began running through exercises:

Blocking falling debris with Shield, absorbing kinetic and magical force alike.

Stepping across rooftops, phasing behind obstacles with Misty Step.

Casting minor Abjurations to test Arcane Ward recharge speed.

Practicing subtle, undetectable magical interference—enough to manipulate objects, misdirect security cameras, or trip a gang patrol.

Every action reinforced a single truth: Gotham had not gained an advantage, only he had lost a few spell slots.

By the time the rain slowed to a drizzle, Valerian had mapped his magical efficiency, tested all signature abilities, and confirmed that he could operate as if he were Level 20, provided he was judicious with casting.

He paused, leaning against the edge of the rooftop. Below, Gotham pulsed with life—crime, chaos, and potential allies in the shadows. Six months remained before the Young Justice Team would appear on the scene. Six months to prepare. Six months to learn, adapt, and survive without exposing magic.

And Valerian Nightseeker was ready.

"Level 10," he whispered. "But Level 20 in every way that matters."
