Chapter 1 - Price July 6th 2025

I entred the shop I normally went to, Kevin's Second Life Items.

It was a small shop that sold second hand items and being a poor college graduate who was recently unemployed it was like heaven. I gazed around the shop taking my time searching for a nice warm jacket.

Then my eyes laid on it. It was a slick winter jacket, the kind with pockets on every side. I slowly walked towards it as if someone were going to take it from me. I softly pressed my hand onto the jacket. Yes! I finally found a cheap jacket. I slowly grinned as I started taking it off the rack.

I stepped towards the counter "Hey! Honan, how are ya!" Kevin the cashier asked. "Nothing much." I mumbeld not in the mood to talk. Kevin not reading my mood responed cheerily "Okay! Well it's 40 bucks, you got that?". I nodded before rummadging in my pockets and pulled out some old bills. "Uh... 20.. 25.. 35.. 40!" I counted, placing the bills on the counter. "Alrighty then!" Kevin said while taking the money. "Oh! Here!" Kevin added sliding me the jacket but he carefully placed a 10 dollar bill in the pocket.

Who does he think he is? Does he think I can't see him slide the 10 in? Is he taking pity on me?I pondered before I realised I had to take the jacket. "Thank you." I responded before leaving.

I glanced up at the sky, it was still snowing softly. I sighed before I walked back home, feet crunching the snow below. Then I paused slipped on the jacket and checked the time. It was 10:38 PM. I glanced at my phone before taking a double take. "What!?! I'm going to be late!" I slipped my cracked phone into my pocket as I raced down the street.

I slided into the restaurant, panting and out of breath. "I'm so sorry!" I said seeing my boss up front. "You're on your last chance!" He hollered at me. " Go home for today! We already have Bennly filling in!" I stared at him. But! I need money! For food! For henry! I don't HAVE family to help me!!I screamed internally before accepting my loss and walked home solemnly.
