"Webster, what exactly are you trying to say? Are you actually accusing Jill of framing Sallie?" Zora whirled around to face him, her eyes blazing with rage.
Kevin's face hardened. "You have no right to attack Jill like that. You need to apologize to her immediately."
Webster froze in place, completely shocked. He'd never witnessed Zora or Kevin stare at him with such contempt, like he was some sort of monster. All he'd done was repeat what he'd overheard—the facts.
Bewildered and rattled, he looked toward Jill, silently begging for her support.
Jill appeared to understand his desperate plea and quickly stepped in. "Mom, Kevin, please don't get mad at Webster. Seeing Grandpa collapse like that probably made him emotional, which is why he defended Sallie."
Her words carried a trace of pain, but her delivery was sincere, as though she genuinely wanted to restore peace. Webster felt a wave of shame wash over him, and he nearly wanted to smack himself.
