I faced Kane and Jill, forcing sincerity into my voice. "Mr. Wesley, I apologize for the fight. Ms. Noah, I'm sorry I pushed you."
The words came from somewhere deeper than the hollow apologies I'd been forced to recite at St. Chaim Reform Academy. Those bastards had wrung fake confessions from me countless times.
I just wanted the Noahs gone. If admitting to crimes I'd never committed would make them disappear, so be it. Since turning eighteen, I'd lost track of how many false confessions they'd beaten out of me.
My sudden surrender stunned everyone.
They'd expected me to stay defiant. They'd braced for screaming, for me to insist I was right and accuse them of conspiracy, maybe even lash out at them for picking Jill's side—the usual script. Why was I folding now?
All eyes locked on me as I stood there, waiting for their next move. The fury that had been burning in their faces moments before slowly dimmed.
