Tonia's POV

When I finished my meal, a doctor entered to examine my injuries. She brought fresh clothing and applied healing ointment to my wounds with gentle hands.

The irony wasn't lost on me. I could drain pain from others with a simple touch, yet remained powerless against my own suffering. That was the cruel reality of being a Siphon. We existed to heal everyone except ourselves.

The doctor was still tending to my bandages when Kermit returned.

His shirt clung to his muscled frame, drenched in sweat. He looked like he'd been pushing himself hard in the gym or running for miles.

Gia immediately rose from her chair beside my bed, her expression stormy.

"You should listen to me, Tonia. Come stay in my room instead."

God, Gia was relentless.

"I'm okay, really."

She let out an exasperated breath. "Fine. I'm leaving then. I'll check on you later." She departed with the children, who had already rushed to embrace Kermit upon his arrival.
