Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: The Fall of Kingpin

The two heroes left the subway car. Just as Peter was about to leap, he stopped Miles. He lifted his wrist, revealing the communicator built into his suit. With a quick tap, a holographic projection of The Prowler appeared. This was a small "gadget" Peter had just discovered was installed in the suit.

Due to the severe spatial turbulence, The Prowler's figure flickered, and his voice was intermittent, but they could understand his words. The Prowler said: "I found the green button. Should I press it now?"

Peter looked at Miles. Miles nodded. "Uncle Aaron, press it now!"

Peter? Kingpin is unconscious, but this kid is way too trusting, isn't he?

"That's practically spelling out your secret identity!" Peter (Earth-616) thought, slightly exasperated. Miles, however, remained oblivious to the breach of secrecy.

The Prowler on the other end didn't react much; after all, Madam Octopus had already guessed Miles's true identity. Since the die was cast, he just needed to do what was necessary before it was too late.

Seeing Miles nod, The Prowler slammed the green button next to him.

The link between the liquid helium system and the Particle Collider/Accelerator was instantly severed. The collider's superconducting magnets, already on the brink of failure due to the constant overload, were instantly destroyed by the extreme heat. The outward-rushing particle streams reversed into an inward vortex, creating a powerful vacuum. The particle flow around the collision chamber immediately dissipated, and the foreign objects that had intruded from other universes began to undergo a reverse collapse, returning to their proper places. The bizarre, floating structures that had filled the space vanished one by one.

Peter and Miles, caught by the strong inward wind, were nearly sucked into the former collider site. Fortunately, both reacted instantly, shooting webs from both hands and clinging tightly to the walls, managing to resist the fierce pull.

Once the strong winds subsided, the area around the collider was already a massive wreck, unrecognizable from its former state.

"Phew—" Miles let out a long breath. "That was intense! I didn't expect destroying the collider to do that." Peter nodded: "Indeed. If we hadn't reacted quickly, we would have been pulled in."

"But..." Miles suddenly noticed a problem. He looked at Peter's hands and feet, which were plastered against the metal wall, and asked confusedly: "Where is Kingpin?" Miles recalled that Peter had wrapped Kingpin's hands and feet with webbing, carried him, and was holding him just moments before...

Peter also looked down at his hands, puzzled: "Where is Kingpin?"

Then, both heroes turned simultaneously to look at the accelerator particle port nearest to them.

"HOLY CRAP!!!" "WHAT THE HECK?!!!"

Peter frantically tried to recall the moment the strong winds hit. He had been mid-air at the time. Startled by the gale, he had instinctively shot webs with both hands to grab the nearest anchor point and stabilize himself. At that moment, he was still carrying Kingpin... So, if his assumption was correct, Kingpin should now be...

Miles stared blankly at the accelerator particle port, utterly silent, his thoughts unknown. Perhaps he felt relieved? He no longer had to choose between killing Kingpin to protect his family and letting him live to uphold the law. Regardless, Miles felt a surge of relief deep inside.

Peter quickly recovered. Logically, this was technically his first kill, and he should have been panicking. But strangely, he wasn't. Perhaps influenced by Spider-Man Noir's pragmatic view, Kingpin was a truly evil criminal. Peter felt no guilt over his death. Or perhaps it was because Kingpin didn't die directly by his hand. In a sense, Kingpin had effectively "committed suicide." The Particle Collider was his creation, and it was the Particle Collider that killed him...

"Ahem," Peter cleared his throat. "We should leave immediately. I estimate there will be another massive explosion soon." The Particle Collider had lost its ability to constrain the particle flow due to the overheating of the magnets, but it was still operational. It just wasn't producing anything anymore. Instead, it had "consumed" several random objects. The more high-tech a device, the more precise it is. The ingestion of all that debris would inevitably cause incalculable damage to its internal structure. Therefore, an explosion was practically inevitable.

"Okay." Miles, who hadn't paid close attention to Peni's technical data, trusted Peter completely now. Without the debris of space-time turbulence to block them, they quickly found Miles's uncle—The Prowler (Aaron Davis).

Aaron Davis looked at the two heroes arriving empty-handed, disappointed. He assumed they had failed to capture Kingpin. He was already mentally mapping out Kingpin's other safe houses, preparing to fight to the death, figuring that whether he or Kingpin died, his brother's family would at least be safe.

Fortunately, Peter noticed his subtle actions and guessed his thoughts. Peter pointed toward the distant accelerator particle port: "When the collider shut down, Kingpin was sucked into the accelerator. It seems you won't have to worry about his revenge anymore."

Aaron Davis paused, and then a look of surprise and sheer relief visibly washed over his face. "Is that true? That's fantastic!" Aaron instinctively cheered but immediately realized that showing such happiness about someone's death in front of his nephew might set a bad example. He cleared his throat awkwardly: "Ahem, I mean, that's too bad. I was hoping to defeat him and hand him over to the police."

Peter rolled his eyes. No one believes that.

Even Miles sighed, rubbing his forehead at his uncle's poor performance.

The three quickly moved past the brief interlude. Aaron Davis left first; he needed to return to his place and clean up. Although he had broken away from Kingpin's criminal organization, he had worked for him. While Kingpin was alive, it was one thing. Now that he was dead, others might trace clues back to Aaron. Many in Kingpin's empire knew his true identity! He needed to immediately return and destroy any incriminating evidence.

After Aaron Davis departed, Peter and Miles also slipped out of the underground tunnels under the cover of night.
