When Sōgo finally returned to the Soul Society, he realized just how much had happened in the years he'd been away.
"Sōgo, I've already filed another appeal with Central 46 regarding your sister's case. The very idea that a head of one of the Five Great Noble Clans would betray the Soul Society is absurd—laughable! As the heir of the royal Five Houses, she would never do anything that could harm the Soul Society's interests…"
Wearing the snow-white haori of the 5th Division, with its insignia embroidered on the back, stood a man with brown hair and a calm, faint smile: Aizen Sōsuke. Known among the Gotei 13 as the mild-mannered "good guy" alongside Ukitake Jūshirō, Aizen made no effort to hide his presence. He walked openly into the Shihōin estate—the very house that had just been shaken by the disgrace of its clan head—and declared his friendship with Shihōin Sōgo for all to hear. It was a statement not only to Central 46 but to every power-holder in Soul Society: he stood firmly on the side of the Five Great Noble Clans. He would defend their honor, serve their interests, and be known as Sōgo's "brother-in-arms."
"No need to get so worked up," Sōgo replied calmly, seated in the great hall of the Shihōin estate, his demeanor as tranquil as the still waters of the courtyard pond. "Just a pathetic little power play—schemes only daring to unfold while I was away. At best, nothing more than small-time opportunists acting out their own little coup."
On the low table beside him rested a letter left by Yoruichi. It contained only a single warning: "The true enemy is unknown. Do not act rashly." Alongside it lay two textbooks from the Shin'ō Academy, their prefaces subtly altered. From this alone, Sōgo could piece together what had happened while he was gone: Central 46, unable to bear the fact that although they were the supreme rulers of the Soul Society under the Spirit King, the Five Great Noble Clans still stood above them as the original founders. And so, unable to endure it any longer, they had resorted to underhanded measures.
Compared to the stagnant waters of Seireitei and Central 46, Sōgo thought the ever-changing World of the Living—full of fresh and wild energy—was far more suited to his sister's nature.
From there, the narrative shifts to the Shihōin siblings: Yūshirō, left behind as acting clan head, struggling with duties, his mischievous little sister Sanhana (OC) teasing him mercilessly, and their sibling dynamic spilling into playful-yet-serious bursts of spiritual pressure—only for Yūshirō to be thoroughly beaten down in the end. Despite Yoruichi's absence, the Shihōin family still retained multiple captain-class combatants, enough to secure their noble privileges against Central 46's growing reach.
Meanwhile, Aizen and Sōgo moved on, heading to the 1st Division barracks.
There, in a rare gathering, nearly all the captains of the Gotei 13 had assembled. What was supposed to be Sōgo's captaincy exam was combined with the formal appointment ceremony. The test? Simply to demonstrate his Bankai.
At Yamamoto Genryūsai's command, Sōgo unsheathed his blade, Kojiba, and spoke the release. The surge of spiritual pressure that erupted was like a tidal wave—enough to crack the very foundations of the barracks and bring even veteran captains to the brink of collapse. Yamamoto stopped him immediately, unwilling to let the devastation continue.
"Four Great Noble's heir… this spiritual pressure rivals legends…" he muttered, his old memories stirred by the sight of that Zanpakutō.
Despite the cut-short display, Yamamoto declared the test passed. From that day, Shihōin Sōgo was officially recognized as Captain of the 2nd Division and Commander of the Punishment Force.
His overwhelming Reiatsu left everyone shaken. Kyōraku clutched his hat nervously, afraid it would be blown away. Ukitake coughed violently, the hidden illness inside him stirred by the sheer force. Shiba Isshin muttered under his breath that Sōgo's power might even surpass his own Bankai.
With casual words of camaraderie, Sōgo accepted his new post and left with Kuchiki Ginrei. Yet the captains who remained knew: this new "junior" was a storm unto himself.
Later, as Sōgo walked with Ginrei, they spoke about Yoruichi's sudden "defection," the unrest within the Gotei, and the dangerous unknown enemy lurking beneath it all. They also encountered Kuchiki Sōjun's son-in-law, Kuchiki Kōga—whose strong Reiatsu marked him as a rising force within the clan. Sōgo greeted him warmly, though privately, Ginrei advised him never to refuse any gift that Sōgo might give. After all, a weapon forged by the so-called "God-given Armory Squad" was never something to discard.
By the end, the tension in Seireitei was palpable. Central 46's grip was weakening, noble politics were shifting, rebellion was brewing among the Shinigami ranks, and yet the mastermind behind it all remained hidden. Even with all his strength, Sōgo could only sigh—power meant little when there was no target to strike.
