Before the situation could escalate further, Zhang Xiaofan slammed the table.
"That's enough! If you two don't stop, I'll deal with both of you later."
The words stunned both women into silence....then, as if rehearsed, they snapped in unison:
Stay out of women's matters!"
Zeng Shushu couldn't contain himself. He covered his mouth with his fan, laughter spilling out.
Zhang Xiaofan, exasperated, waved them off. "Fine, fine. Keep arguing if you want. I'll just enjoy the fish."
And with that, he picked up his chopsticks again, while tension and laughter hung in the air.
Biyao, won't you listen to me?"
Aunt You's voice rang out again.
Hearing this, Biyao quickly walked over, smiling.
"Aunt You, I always listen to you!"
After Biyao's mother passed away, her father...the Ghost King....was always busy with sect matters.
It was Aunt You who stayed by her side, raising and caring for her. In Biyao's heart, Aunt You was more than family....she was both a friend and a guardian.
Aunt You glanced down and noticed Zhang Xiaofan staring at her with unusual intensity.
Could he have recognized me? she thought for a moment. Impossible.
He's just an ordinary disciple from Qingyun Sect. There's no way he could know who I really am.
But still… she felt something strangely familiar about him. His aura reminded her of an immortal sword....like the legendary man who, three hundred years ago, stormed the Demon Sect's headquarters with just a single blade… Wan Jianyi!
Shaking her head, Aunt You dismissed the thought. Zhang Xiaofan looked too ordinary. Among the four disciples with him, he was the plainest....especially with that ugly stick tied at his waist. The others carried elegant swords, clearly powerful spiritual weapons.
After one last glance, Aunt You led Biyao back to her room.
Zeng Shushu, noticing Zhang Xiaofan's stare, laughed and teased:
"Xiaofan, are you captivated by them? One young, one mature....quite the pair!"
"Go to hell," Zhang Xiaofan snapped. "Didn't you notice how unusual they are? Their identities seem suspicious."
Qi Hao, usually proud and dismissive, actually agreed this time:
"Young ones, listen carefully. I've fought the Demon Sect many times.
My instincts tell me these two women are demons....and not ordinary ones.
They dared to confront us so close to Qingyun Sect. Their status in the Demon Sect must be very high."
Zhang Xiaofan clapped his hands.
"As expected of our hundred-year-old senior brother. Aside from your creepy obsession with my sixteen-year-old senior sister, I'll admit....you have sharp eyes."
Qi Hao just snorted coldly, unwilling to argue further. He had been beaten by Zhang Xiaofan before, and his ribs still hadn't healed. He could only swallow his anger and act cautious.
Zhang Xiaofan then said seriously:
"Forget about them for now. Our mission is to reach the Ten Thousand Bats Ancient Cave. We can't afford distractions."
Qi Hao tried to protest but, feeling the pain in his chest, quickly gave up.
"You're the boss. Fine."
The group finished their meal. By now, the sky had grown dark.
The restaurant, Shanhaiyuan, was the largest in Heyang City. Behind the main hall lay a spacious garden and guest rooms.
After dinner, Qi Hao said, "It's late. This isn't Qingyun Sect—we should rest early. Tomorrow we leave at dawn."
Zhang Xiaofan nodded. For all of Qi Hao's flaws, his experience was valuable. He respected him… except for that perverted crush on Senior Sister Tian Ling'er.
Zeng Shushu, fanning himself, grinned.
"Senior Brother Qi, relax. Heyang City has always been peaceful."
The two left for their rooms, while Zhang Xiaofan walked the other way.
Suddenly, a cold voice called out:
"Wait!"
From behind a pillar, Lu Xueqi stepped into the moonlight.
Zhang Xiaofan wasn't surprised...he had already sensed her presence.
"What's wrong?"
Lu Xueqi hesitated. The memory of the Seven Clans Martial Competition played in her mind. Back then, Zhang Xiaofan had used the Ghost Slaying Art against her.
At the last moment, he had withdrawn his strike...even though it meant suffering backlash himself...just to avoid injuring her.
And two years earlier, he had also given her the Great Brahma Prajna, the supreme technique of Tianyin Temple.
These favors weighed heavily on her heart. Tonight, she had waited here, determined to ask him.
Taking a step closer, her voice soft, she asked:
"Why did you hold back that day at the competition? Why would you risk hurting yourself rather than hurt me?"
Bathed in silver moonlight, her face was flawless, her skin glowing like jade.
Zhang Xiaofan stood silent for a while, then finally said:
"Because… so."
"…???" Lu Xueqi blinked in confusion.
"That's not an answer! What does that even mean?"
Zhang Xiaofan only shrugged.
"I told you. Because… so."
Lu Xueqi felt her heart tremble, both frustrated and moved. She leaned in closer, making sure no one else could hear. Her warm breath brushed against his ear as she whispered:
"Then tell me....why did you give me the Great Brahma Prajna at the Moon Viewing Terrace?"
Zhang Xiaofan caught her faint fragrance, so close he could almost feel her heartbeat. He replied simply:
"Because I wanted to give it to you."
"Huh?" Lu Xueqi's beautiful eyes widened.
"What kind of reason is that? You're making me so confused…"
