The faint promise of a warm day was filtering through the pine trees that encircled the central lodge of Silverclaw. Smoke continued to curl up from the cooking fires where the wounded rested and the tired slept. I stood in the archway—Torin's cloak wrapped snug against the early morning chill—thinking over all that we'd been through in just these past few nights: the guardian's trial, the Blackfang invasion, the sacrificial severing of Lila and Kael's bond. As the hush of dawn broke, I felt my heart beat to the drum of remorse.
