Chapter 28 - Chapter Twenty-Eight (28) Pressure and Progress

Yvonne: "Morning, everyone. Let's try to keep today smooth, okay?"

Whitney: "Smooth is a relative term. Are we defining smooth as 'no Adrian drama' or 'no coffee spills'?"

Andrew: "I vote for both."

Jordan: "I'll accept both. But let's start with the updates. Andrew, you first?"

Andrew: "Right. So, I finished integrating the feedback into the workflow guide. I also added a new section for project handoffs."

Adrian: "Interesting. But are you sure the handoff section covers all the edge cases? I noticed in yesterday's session that there were small gaps."

Yvonne: "Edge cases are always evolving, Adrian. That's why we collaborate, not criticize."

Adrian: "I'm just trying to prevent mistakes before they happen."

Jordan: "And you could do that without undermining Andrew's work."

Adrian: "I think constructive criticism is necessary."

Whitney: "Constructive doesn't have to come across like a dagger."

Andrew: "I… I can handle feedback, really. I just—"

Yvonne: "You can handle it, Andrew. We'll all handle it together."

Adrian: "Are you implying I'm alone in this?"

Yvonne: "No, I'm implying we're a team. That includes you. It doesn't mean tearing someone else down."

Jordan: "Exactly."

Adrian: "…Fine. Moving on."

Whitney: "About moving on—can we actually try presenting today without interruptions from anyone pretending to be the moral compass?"

Yvonne: "Agreed. Let's stay focused."

Andrew: "Okay… I'll start the presentation on the resource guide updates."

Adrian: "If you don't mind, I'd like to comment during your slides. Just to clarify certain points."

Yvonne: "Comment if it's constructive, Adrian. Otherwise, hold it."

Adrian's jaw tightened, but he nodded. "Fine."

Andrew cleared his throat and began, explaining every update he'd made. His voice wavered slightly at first, but as he walked through each section, he became more confident.

Whitney: "See? Already solid."

Yvonne: "Yeah. Look at him. He's owning it."

Adrian scribbled on his pad. "Hmm."

Yvonne: "What's 'hmm' supposed to mean?"

Adrian: "I'm just noting observations."

Jordan: "Noted enough. Let's hear Andrew through to the end."

Andrew finished, hands slightly trembling. "And that's all the updates I have for now."

There was silence. Then Yvonne: "Andrew, this is fantastic. It's clear, organized, and honestly, it makes all of our workflows easier."

Whitney: "I agree! It's also something new hires could actually use without constant hand-holding."

Adrian: "Well, I still think it could use refinement. There are areas where clarity could improve."

Yvonne: "Okay, let's refine as a team. Not as one person picking apart another."

Jordan: "Exactly."

Andrew smiled slightly, gaining confidence. "Thanks. That means a lot."

Adrian leaned back. "You're lucky people are on your side."

Yvonne: "We're all on the same side, Adrian. Some of us just know how to act like it."

Adrian didn't respond immediately, and Yvonne noticed the slight shift in his posture—he was less relaxed, a flicker of uncertainty in his expression.

Whitney: "Finally! Progress."

Andrew: "Yeah, I feel… lighter."

Yvonne: "Good. That's how we want everyone to feel. Not scared of sharing, not scared of mistakes. We grow together."

Adrian: "Hmph."

Jordan: "Exactly. Hmph doesn't count as contribution."

Adrian's lips twitched. "Noted."

Yvonne: "Alright. Moving on. Let's hear Jordan's updates."

Jordan walked everyone through the analytics projections, his voice calm and steady, but every so often he threw glances at Adrian, who kept scribbling.

Whitney: "Do you think he's trying to find something to pounce on?"

Yvonne: "Probably. Let's just focus."

Jordan: "If we all focus, there's nothing for him to manipulate."

Adrian leaned forward suddenly. "I notice that in the analytics projection, some trends seem inconsistent with last month's data. Did anyone consider that?"

Yvonne: "Yes, Adrian. We did. And it's accounted for. No need to panic."

Adrian: "It's not panic. Just… observation."

Andrew: "Observation that comes across like judgment, maybe."

Adrian: "Judgment is necessary for improvement."

Whitney: "Improvement doesn't require intimidation."

Yvonne: "Right. Let's stick to facts, not drama."

Jordan: "Agreed."

Adrian: "…"

Yvonne: "Exactly."

Whitney: "Now that we've solved the office's mystery, let's talk about the real work."

Andrew: "Can we review the automation tool I finished yesterday? I think it could really help streamline our tasks."

Yvonne: "Yes! Let's do it. Adrian, please don't interrupt this time."

Adrian: "I'll be quiet."

Yvonne raised an eyebrow. "Not promising, just stating the rules."

Adrian smirked faintly.

Andrew projected the tool on the screen. "So, here's how it works. I've designed it so that repetitive steps are automated, notifications go to the right team members, and common errors are flagged immediately."

Whitney: "Oh wow, that's smart."

Yvonne: "This is excellent. Everyone who has to manage cross-team projects will save so much time."

Adrian: "It's efficient, but are you considering scalability? Once the number of projects doubles, can it handle the load?"

Andrew: "Yes, I've tested it on larger datasets, and it adapts without errors."

Adrian: "Hmm. Impressive."

Yvonne: "See? Andrew can handle it. Your skepticism isn't necessary."

Jordan: "I'm impressed as well. This actually makes our workflow smoother."

Whitney: "I say we implement it tomorrow."

Yvonne: "Agreed. Everyone in favor?"

Andrew: "Yes."

Whitney: "Absolutely."

Jordan: "Yes."

Adrian: "Fine. If you think it works."

Yvonne: "It does work. You just have to accept it."

Adrian: "…"

Yvonne: "Exactly."

---

Later that afternoon, the tension eased slightly. The team gathered in the break room for a quick coffee run.

Andrew: "I still can't believe the tool works without constant errors."

Whitney: "You did all the work. You deserve the praise."

Yvonne: "Yes, you do. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

Andrew: "Thanks. I needed that. Honestly, today was hard. Having him constantly—"

Yvonne: "Adrian?"

Andrew: "…yeah. But with you and Jordan supporting me, I feel stronger."

Jordan: "Good. That's exactly what we wanted."

Whitney: "You're officially a star, Andrew. Don't forget it."

Andrew: "I'll try not to."

Adrian appeared in the doorway, leaning casually.

Adrian: "Coffee break?"

Yvonne: "Yes, and you're welcome to join. But keep it civil."

Adrian: "Civil? Always. I just want to observe team morale."

Whitney: "Observation? You mean interrogation."

Adrian: "Semantics."

Yvonne: "Just remember, it's a team. Not a competition."

Adrian's smirk flickered. "I'll keep that in mind."

Jordan: "Good. We're done with the theatrics."

Adrian: "…Understood."

He left without another word.

Andrew exhaled. "I can't believe he's still trying."

Yvonne: "Ignore him. Focus on what matters."

Whitney: "Like your tool."

Andrew: "Right. Tomorrow we implement it."

Yvonne: "Exactly."

Jordan: "And tomorrow, we show Ms. Caldwell the progress we've made. Let her see a united team."

Andrew: "Do you think she'll notice?"

Yvonne: "She has to. The results speak louder than Adrian's manipulations."

Whitney: "I can't wait to see his face when she praises all of us."

Yvonne: "Let's just focus on making her proud of the work, not proving a point to him."

Andrew: "Yeah. He's just background noise now."

Yvonne: "Exactly."

Jordan: "And when we finish this two-week test, Adrian will realize that unity beats manipulation."

Whitney: "Finally!"

Yvonne: "Tomorrow is another day. We keep the momentum."

Andrew: "I'm ready."

Yvonne: "We're all ready."

They all shared a brief, victorious smile.

Adrian's distant presence couldn't shadow their progress. The team had survived day one. They were growing stronger, more confident, and more united.

Yvonne: "Team, let's finish up. Tomorrow, we present results, we implement the tool, and we show that this team can thrive together."

Whitney: "And we survive Adrian's commentary!"

Andrew: "I feel like we can."

Jordan: "We will."

Yvonne: "Together."

Whitney: "Together."

Andrew: "Together."

Jordan: "Together."

They all laughed, the tension breaking into a quiet joy. The storm of observation had begun, but for the first time, they felt like they could weather it without fear.

Yvonne: "Tomorrow, we shine."

Adrian: "We'll see."

Yvonne: "Yes. We will."

And for the first time, she truly believed it.
