The tension in the office felt thicker than usual as the two-week observation period truly began. Everyone pretended things were normal, but the air pulsed with unspoken awareness. Every conversation felt watched. Every interaction felt heavier. Even the way people typed at their desks sounded more careful, more measured.
Yvonne tried to breathe through it, but the pressure still clung to her shoulders like a weight she couldn't shake off.
Jordan approached her desk early that morning, leaning against the partition with a soft expression.
Jordan: "Morning. You holding up?"
Yvonne forced a small smile. "Trying. You?"
Jordan: "I'll be better once this whole evaluation is over. The vibe in here feels… staged."
Yvonne: "Everyone's scared to blink wrong."
Jordan lowered his voice. "Adrian's been unusually quiet."
Yvonne: "That's what scares me."
Before Jordan could respond, Adrian passed by them with a too-pleasant nod.
Adrian: "Good morning, team."
Jordan's eyes narrowed. Yvonne didn't reply.
As soon as Adrian disappeared around the corner, Jordan exhaled.
Jordan: "Yep. He's up to something."
Yvonne rubbed her temples. "Let's just focus on our work and stick together."
They separated to start their tasks, but Yvonne couldn't shake the feeling that something was simmering beneath the surface.
Hours later, the team gathered for their weekly sync-up. Everyone took their seats with the kind of caution you'd expect before an exam. Ms. Caldwell wasn't present, but everyone knew she'd be reviewing all notes and follow-ups.
Yvonne sat beside Whitney.
Whitney leaned close and whispered: "Andrew's nervous."
Yvonne glanced to where Andrew sat, fiddling with his pen. "I'll check on him after the meeting."
The meeting began with Jordan facilitating, though Adrian's presence made the atmosphere tight.
Jordan: "Alright, let's walk through updates. Andrew, want to start?"
Andrew cleared his throat, trying to steady his voice.
Andrew: "Yes. Uh, I updated the workflow guide. I integrated some feedback from the last session, and I've organized a section on cross-team communication."
Adrian shifted in his seat.
Adrian: "If I may—"
Jordan cut in before Adrian could continue. "Let's let Andrew finish."
Adrian's jaw tensed, but he leaned back.
Andrew continued, gaining confidence. "I also created templates that can help new hires or interns catch up quickly. The goal is to avoid confusion between project leads."
Whitney whispered from beside Yvonne: "He's doing so good."
Yvonne nodded proudly.
When Andrew was done, several people murmured supportive comments. But Adrian wasn't satisfied.
Adrian: "Andrew, the guide is a good initiative. But are you sure it's comprehensive enough? I'm just concerned that without professional oversight, we might be encouraging shortcuts."
Andrew's confidence visibly faltered.
Yvonne spoke before he could shrink.
Yvonne: "The guide has been helping everyone. If there are specific improvements you want to contribute, Adrian, you can share them instead of dismissing the entire effort."
Adrian blinked slowly, surprised by how directly she countered him.
Adrian: "I wasn't dismissing. I was clarifying."
Jordan: "Your clarifications always sound like warnings."
A few team members looked down to avoid the tension.
Adrian maintained his smile. "I'm simply aiming for excellence."
Yvonne: "Then help build, not destroy."
The room fell silent. Andrew stared at her with gratitude.
Jordan nodded toward the screen. "Moving on."
By the time the meeting ended, the strain had soaked into everyone's expressions. People left in quiet clusters, whispering among themselves.
Yvonne stayed behind for a moment, gathering her laptop.
Andrew approached her carefully.
Andrew: "Thanks for stepping in."
Yvonne shook her head. "You didn't need me. You were doing amazing."
Andrew sighed. "I was until he spoke. Every time Adrian opens his mouth, I feel like I'm being… graded."
Yvonne: "You're not. You're growing, and it bothers him."
Andrew: "Why is he like this?"
Yvonne gave him a small, sad smile. "Competitive people don't always know how to share the stage."
Whitney popped her head back into the room.
Whitney: "Are we venting? Because I brought snacks."
Yvonne laughed for the first time that day. "Yes. We're venting."
They escaped to the break room.
Whitney tossed a bag of chips onto the table. "Adrian looked at Andrew the way a cat looks at an unstable shelf."
Andrew laughed weakly. "I feel like one."
Yvonne: "You're not unstable. You're just stepping into your strength."
Whitney pointed a finger dramatically. "And we like that!"
Andrew smiled. "Thanks. I'm trying."
Their light moment was cut short when Jordan walked in carrying a stack of papers.
Jordan: "Hey, guys. Quick heads-up. Ms. Caldwell scheduled individual check-ins for next week."
Andrew blanched. Whitney smacked her forehead.
Whitney: "Great. As if we weren't stressed enough already."
Jordan placed the documents down. "We'll get through it. Together."
Yvonne nodded. "Exactly."
They shared a collective breath before heading back to their tasks.
Later in the afternoon, Yvonne printed materials for one of her assignments. As she waited by the printer, Adrian stepped into the same corridor.
He leaned against the wall casually.
Adrian: "You know, you didn't have to challenge me in front of everyone."
Yvonne didn't look up. "I challenged what you were doing, not you."
Adrian: "You're making this personal."
Yvonne: "No, Adrian. You are."
He let out a small, humorless chuckle.
Adrian: "You're creating an environment where people think they can contribute anything and it'll be accepted."
Yvonne: "Because they can contribute. And they should."
Adrian: "Not everything people create is valuable."
She finally looked up at him. "That's why we have teamwork. To improve things together. Not to tear people down to feel powerful."
Adrian's stare hardened.
Adrian: "You think you understand leadership?"
Yvonne: "I understand people. That's something you're struggling with."
He stepped closer.
Adrian: "Careful, Yvonne. Respect goes both ways."
Jordan's voice echoed from around the corner.
Jordan: "Everything okay here?"
Adrian stepped back instantly.
Adrian: "Of course. Just a chat."
Jordan's eyes narrowed. "Looked more like a lecture."
Adrian: "You love assuming the worst."
Jordan: "You make it easy."
Adrian's jaw tightened again.
Adrian: "Enjoy your day."
He walked off with stiff shoulders.
Jordan turned to her. "You okay?"
Yvonne exhaled. "I'm fine."
Jordan: "You sure?"
Yvonne nodded. "He just wanted to remind me he's watching."
Jordan: "Then let him watch you win."
Her laughter was soft but genuine.
By the end of the workday, the pressure from the observation period weighed on everyone. People packed quietly, conversations brief, movements careful.
Yvonne lingered at her desk, tying up a few loose ends. Jordan approached again, coat in hand.
Jordan: "Heading home soon?"
Yvonne: "Yeah, just finishing this email."
Jordan: "Want me to wait for you?"
Yvonne glanced up, warmth blooming in her chest. "Yeah. Just a minute."
He sat on the edge of her desk as she typed.
Jordan: "I'm proud of you today, by the way."
Yvonne paused. "For what?"
Jordan: "For standing your ground. For standing up for Andrew. For standing up for yourself."
Yvonne: "I'm tired, Jordan."
Jordan gently touched her shoulder. "I know."
She leaned into his touch for a brief moment.
When they finally walked out together into the cool evening air, there was a quiet peace between them. Not free from worry, not free from tension, but steady — like shared armor.
Jordan: "Two weeks, right?"
Yvonne: "Yeah."
Jordan: "Then we breathe."
Yvonne: "Until the next storm."
Jordan smirked. "Then we weather it together."
She slipped her hand into his.
Yvonne: "Together."
As they crossed the parking lot, she felt the weight of the day pressing down on her — but she also felt the strength of her team, and of Jordan beside her, pushing back against the pressure.
The testing time had begun.
But she wasn't alone in it.
