Chapter 001: Etiquette
A red-haired female knight escorts me silently toward the palace audience room. She's wearing ceremonial armor—black, with gold embroidery and ornate patterns.
I'm a bit nervous.
Why?
Well, before we left the private waiting room, she explained all the rules and etiquette to me.
"Don't be rude to His Majesty. Speak formally. When we enter, walk behind me until I stop. We will then bow on one knee. After that, follow the king's commands. Since this is a formal reward-request ceremony, only speak when spoken to. If you have trouble conveying your request, ask to speak freely or request a private audience."
"I-I'll do my best…"
I look down, already exhausted. I really hate crowds and ceremonies and stuff…
"Just do as I said and you'll be fine," she says, giving me a gentle smile.
Then, without warning, she drops to one knee with her head lowered.
I throw my hands up, looking around in panic.
"Wha-wha-what!?"
"I wish to express my deepest thanks for saving our king's life. I am in your debt."
I cross my arms defensively and take a step back.
"What kind of love-love attack is this!?"
A vein twitches on her forehead.
Oh SHIT.
She looks up, places her hand on her chest, takes a slow breath, and puts on a suuuuuper fake smile that almost blinds me. I instinctively cover my face.
"You misunderstand my intentions, Sir Hero," she says through that terrifying smile.
Scaaary…
She stands up, snapping me out of my daze. I feel… delicately threatened.
"Let's go."
She opens the door and walks out.
"Ah!"
I hurry after her.
I snap back to the present as she comes to a stop in front of a pair of huge white doors.
This must be it.
