This day wasn't really my day.
"You're fired!" I was expecting that as soon as I was told that the head of the department was looking for me, I just braced myself for the worse to come. I merely nodded and headed back to my work table to pack up all my things and honestly, I'm actually glad that I got fired today even though I knew how much I'd risk losing this job but then again, I've hated this job ever since I got hired.
"Hey, you alright?" I look up from the papers I was sorting out and saw Bailey, my coworker for two years, looking at me with visible pity. "Oh yeah, I'm fine," I replied and offered her a smile. She gave me one in return before going back to her work table.
How did this all happen if you might ask? Well, after that old woman left, I lost track of time and realized I was already an hour behind schedule for a pre-presentation. Once I entered the building, the head of the department's secretary came rushing to me and told me to meet him immediately. Unfortunately, I was held up by a bunch of my coworkers who started dumping all their questions about the presentation that I was making. Things didn't end well of course, by the time I had arrived at his office, I was already 20 minutes late and he was fuming.
I didn't even bother to defend myself.
I sigh and look around the room one last time. Most of the people's attention was on me, I couldn't blame them though, the head of the department really had his voice box on ready for me today, I swear I could even feel the walls shake when he started yelling at me.
After saying my goodbyes, I walk out of the building and gave it one last look before heading for the park. My thoughts brought me back to what the old lady had said earlier. I was disturbed, to say the least considering she just randomly grabbed my hand, started tracing patterns over it, and muttering nonsense. I shuddered and shifted the box I was holding to a more comfortable position.
All in all, aside from what had happened this morning, everything was going on well for me, I thought to myself and headed home.
"I'm kicking you out,"
I spoke too soon.
This was something I wasn't expecting at all. I drop the contents on my arms and grabbed the landlady's arm before she could walk away. "Didn't I paid the rent in fully last week, there must be some sort of a mishap and you must have mistaken me for someone that lives here too," this was unacceptable, this was surely a mistake.
She turns around and sighs, "I'm planning on selling the building, a buyer had called me yesterday and offered me a reasonable amount, apparently, they're planning on converting this whole place into a hospital and as for the rent you paid for this month, I'm giving it all back to you as a compensation," and with that being said, she left and entered the building. This wasn't good, not good at all. I had nowhere to go. I've got no relatives and shit like that and looking for a place is probably the last thing I have in mind. Why am I so unlucky?
I groaned and picked up the box that I dropped. I felt disappointed, I had been looking forward to a long warm bath but instead, I have to pack up and leave. As soon as I entered my cheap outdated apartment, I immediately drop everything I was holding and dived straight to my bed, regretting it when a sharp pain shot through my leg as the springs on the bed dug onto my skin. Dust flew all over the place as my bed slammed down on the ground, bouncing me off and to the ground, I went face first.
I stayed there and groan. My phone started ringing from somewhere in my bag and I crawled over it and dug through the contents of it before pulling my phone out. I felt like crying. I sniffled and blinked as fast as I could to stop the tears from falling before pressing the phone weakly to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Temper, it's me," Jodie answered and then I lost it completely. I started crying like a pathetic human being. I sat up and continued wailing like a kid who hadn't got her candy on a Halloween night. "Whoa, whoa, why are you crying? Did something happen?" her voice was frantic and laced with worry. "Today's not been really a good day for me. I'm sorry for that," I apologized meekly, "Where are you? I'm coming there," she said and I closed my eyes to take a deep breath to calm myself.
After telling her my address, she hung up immediately and I just sat there like an idiot. "I should really start packing up," I mumbled to myself and for the rest of the day, all I did was pack up and crying, pathetic? I know.
It was nearing three in the afternoon when I heard a knock. I stood up from my spot on the floor and went over it. Halfway on twisting the doorknob, I was pushed back to the ground as the door slammed open to reveal Jodie wearing business attire. "Temper, where are you?" she shouted and I covered my ears with a wince, "You should really stop screaming like that, these walls are pretty thin you know," I groaned and rub a spot on my forehead. She gasps and went over to me, "Are you alright? Was there a break-in or something? Do I need to call the police?"
She's gonna give me a headache if this continues on.
I pinched the bridge of my nose and clamped my hand on her mouth to shut her up. "Shut it, as you can see, I'm fine and alive so please relax," I sigh and her shoulders sag.
She looks around in confusion, "Um, are you having a room makeover?" she asks and I felt my lower lip tremble and tears once again sprung from my eyes. I felt her wrap her arms around me and pulling me close to her. I got a whiff of her cherry-scented perfume and shampoo. She runs her hand on my head and rubs my back with the other. "Calm down Temp, calm down, tell me what happened," she whispered to my ear and I took a deep breath to calm myself down.
"I got fired…" she gasps, "…and I'm getting kicked out of the building," I hiccupped and she broke away from me to meet my eyes. "That is very unfortunate, where are you going to stay?" she pats the top of my head, probably to fix the mess it had become.
"That's the problem, I don't know," I sigh and rub my eyes to dry it.
She went silent for a second before squealing which took me by surprise. I jump back a little by her sudden outburst. I was about to move away from her when she grabs my shoulders and shook me furiously, "I've got the most brilliant idea, how about you come and stay with me,"
I gaped at her, "That doesn't sound really brilliant at all," I scoffed and she glared at me before grinning like a maniac, "Come on, it's been long since we had seen each other besides, you're like a sister to me, this would be like the greatest sleepover we'll ever have," she squealed and I covered my ears in disdain.
"I'm not really sure that'd be great, you're probably busy and everything,"
She shook her head and scoffed, "That stupid fiance of mine will be able to cover up my absence for a week, it's gonna be fine," my eyes nearly jump out of its sockets hearing her say fiancé, "You have a fi-fiancé?" I stammered and she raise one perfectly trimmed brow, "You didn't know? I thought I told you about it," she shrugs and laughs, "We're not really together because it's our choice, our dads played matchmaker and decided to match us up," she leans in and looks around, "I'm actually rooting for his brother,"
She giggled and pulled away, "Besides, he doesn't really come to talk to me at all, he even sent me and his brother on a date to avoid talking to me," she said enthusiastically and grabbed the nearest box I laid down on the ground, "Now, let's get packing,"
